A true icon, the late Sipho Gumede was an innovative and diverse performer. Winning acclaim for marrying jazz with traditional rhythms, he always defied categorisation. Gumede also mixed rich musical colours into the music he made with Sakhile, a band he formed in 1981. Gumede’s 1992 album, Thank You for Listening, received an OKTV award as the Best African Fusion Album, confirming his status as one of the premier musicians on the continent.

Other career highlights include work with Dollar Brand, Timmy Thomas, Winston Mankunku Harare, Kippie Moeketsie, Mango Groove and Vicky Sampson. In 1995, Gumede was presented with a lifetime achievement award for his valuable contribution to South African music.
