RAS SHEEHAMATop Namibian Rasta singer Ras Sheehama was born in 1966 in Onakayale village in Northern Namibia. At the age of thirteen, he went into exile in Angola and later moved to Zambia as a refugee. It was here that he taught himself to play music. At fifteen, he felt a calling to the Rastafarian way of life and his love for reggae began. He developed his musical talent in Nigeria and returned to Namibia before independence in 1990. He is today, without doubt, the most accomplished Namibian performer and has released three albums.

His fourth album “Pure Love” will nourish your soul with powerful Afro-reggae infused with indigenous Namibian music in the Oshivambo tradition. Sheehama drew his inspiration from many places when writing the album. The album contains many messages that deal with spirituality in the modern world as well as political turmoil. The title track is about how a direct relationship with the creator allows humankind to find it easier to get along with each other.  Sheehama believes that the “relationship between man and God and belief in our Gods is what gives us strength to carry on.” As a practicing Rastafarian, his aim is for the album to highlight the similarities between all of us, rather than the differences. Messages of peace and unity permeate the songs.

Recorded over a four-year period, Pure Love is a timeless classic. “Midnight” has a baseline derived from the 70s disco era. “Inotila” a traditional African track was given a country and Western treatment, while strong Spanish influences can be heard on “I Never”. All of these diverse influences make this a truly world-flavoured album. “Inotilo” won the Sanlam Music Award 2003 and appears on A Handful of Namibians and Papa Wemba album.

The artist has performed all over the world including Germany, England, Cuba, Portugal and other countries. In Johannesburg in 2001 he was the opening act for the legendary reggae act Don Carlos. Recently, Sheehama was in Paris to promote the album A Handful of Namibians & Papa Wemba. He was one of the few artists chosen to showcase the musical talents of Namibia.
